The Provisions Wine School is London’s best place to learn about organic, biodynamic and natural wine. It was founded in 2021 as an extension of Provisions.
THE SCHOOL
As importers and retailers of wine, we meet hundreds of people every week who are seeking advice on what wine to buy and how to pair wine with food.
Hosting wine tastings where we shared our favourite wines made us realise how eager our customers were to learn more about what they had in their glasses and how it is made.
We also meet many who are curious to learn more about the world of organic, biodynamic and natural winemaking but have been confused by endless terminology.
The School was founded with the mission of helping people get more for their money in their local wine shop or bar, make the world of wine more accessible and bust common myths and misconceptions in organic, biodynamic, and natural winemaking.
WHO ARE WE
Sam Povey, co-founder
Sam fell into the world of wine at university before going off to explore off-beat wine regions in Canada, Georgia, and England. In 2018, he started his career wine at Renegade Urban Winery in Bethnal Green before moving on to manage tastings and events at Highbury Vintners. In 2020, he moved to Provisions and currently runs its wine programme. He developed the idea of a wine school dedicated to natural wine in early 2021 in order to improve consumer understanding of how this kind of wine is made.
Hugo Meyer Esquerré, co-founder
Born in Normandy, Hugo Meyer Esquerré started his career as a food critic for the Gault & Millau French Restaurant Guide. In 2009 he moved to London and began working at Borough Wines in London Bridge. Hugo then moved to Oslo, Norway, to work for a French importer and Deli, where he cut his teeth retailing cheeses and wine, and the idea for Provisions was born. He moved back to London and launched Provisions in 2015, with the idea to create a bridge between producers and consumers, and with a real focus on sharing knowledge through food and wine.
PROVISIONS
Provisions is a wine and cheese importer with a shop on Holloway Road, Islington which opened its doors in 2015. We import and wholesale artisan products from small, organic producers, mainly in France and Italy, but also from across Europe.
We work with sustainable, organic and biodynamic winemakers, raw milk cheesemakers and other artisan producers. Our aim is to make wine and artisan food accessible and to share our knowledge and enthusiasm with you.
